Incorporating Culture – Chinese Adoption

That said, this year I decided to add Spring Festival into our plans. We normally don’t really celebrate valentine’s day (worst holiday, IMO) and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to do a quick substitution and learn something in the process.
So I ordered some décor (can find it here) and I also ordered some moon cakes (here) as something special for our celebration. While moon cakes are more traditionally used for the mid-autumn festival, I thought it would make a fun activity to share with family. So we are inviting the cousins over and having a little Chinese new year’s party! We’ll get some local Chinese takeout, including dumplings which are far more traditional, and play a game where we guess the different moon cake flavors.
I also make sure to picked up a few new books to set out for the kids to read. I made sure to get a good mix of hyper educational and more fictional and fun (here, here, and here). This way we can learn the meaning behind the holiday and how it's celebrated more traditionally in China.
Once I get my printables made for the moon cake tasting game I’ll be sure to share so you can consider doing something similar! Whether you have a need to continue to incorporate culture or you just like the idea of some fun new traditions!
Do you celebrate any holidays that aren’t “traditional” for you and your culture? Are you trying to keep culture alive for any of your kids? Help a girl out, what works for you??
